As a 2025 data fellow through the USC Center for Health Journalism, I spent five months refining data journalism skills and investigating the public health effects of Duluth’s aging housing stock. Through that, I produced a three-part series that showed lead paint was poisoning children in Duluth neighborhoods that had older homes, more renters, higher rates of poverty and were less white than the rest of the city. Those characteristics also applied to areas of the city that were less likely to have air conditioning, meaning more frequent heat waves will disproportionately affect the city’s most vulnerable residents, another story found.
And finally, I mapped where the city’s lead lines were and where the city was — or was not — replacing them.
That fellowship helped strengthen data skills I had been building for years, including R programming, QGIS, Datawrapper, Google Sheets and Flourish.

In August 2021, I made two reporting trips to the remote Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior with Duluth News Tribune videographer Samantha Erkkila and photographer Steve Kuchera collecting stories from Grand Portage Band members about their traditional cultural land and families that have had cabins there since before it was a national park.
